Tour of Bluffton, Hilton Head, and Hardeeville

The Cole-Heyward House was built as a summer home for a local plantation owner. It was constructed CIRCA 1840 and is one of only eight antebellum homes remaining in Bluffton. The style of the house was supposedly brought from the West Indies and was popular in times leading up to the Civil War. The house was designed by the owner of the Moreland Plantation, John J. Cole, and was probably constructed using the labor of slaves. The house, it's original slave cabin, and remnants of a summer kitchen are all intact today. Source: http://www.heywardhouse.org/

Hunting Island State Park has beach access, hiking, soon to be reopened lighthouse stairclimbing, and other recreational activities. Lighthouse is really cool.

The Savannah National Wildlife Refuge lets folks take a drive-thru look at Savannah and Lowcountry Marsh environments. They allow fishing but not pets. You can even take your Johnboat. Just watch out for gators. This is where all GA and SC Department of Natural Resources around this region relocate nuisance aligators.

"Hardeeville, Home of Old Number 7." So just what is Old Number 7? A baseball player?
"Old Number 7" was once a workhorse of the Argent Lumber Company located in Hardeeville. The steam engine is a 1910 model Porter that had a top speed of 35 mph empty or 15 mph full, which was ideal for short hauling trips from the forested areas to the lumber mill. The restored and preserved engine now is located at the City of Hardeeville's City Hall complex and is a favorite attraction. Courtesy of http://www.ginascottrealty.com/

This is one of Bluffton's many lagoons. The tide washes up into this one from the May River.

New River runs up the border of Beafort and Jasper Counties. There is a boat landing and fresh water fishing.

Ruins of Old Sheldon Prince William's Parish Church on the way to Beaufort, South Carolina from Point South, exit 33 on I-95. The church was built in 1745. It was burned in 1779 by the British. It was rebuilt in 1876. Then the Yankees burned it down after using it as a stable for their horses. I have no wonders why the Union army was so hated. Sheldon Church was named for the ancestral home of the Bull family in Warwickshire, England. Services are held there the second Sunday after Easter.

The Frampton house is an old mansion restored and turned into a tourist stop and gift shop. They also have a few small spots for information on the filming of movies in the Lowcountry. One in particular has the tv from Forest Gump and a replica of the "Jenny." (My wife wasn't impressed.)

Beaufort waterfront park.

"The Castle" was where Demi Moore stayed during the filming of GI Jane.

The Beaufort arsenal

The Beaufort national cemetery is where the hero's of The War for Southern Independence, World Wars, the Korean War, and many others have come to rest together.
